The Anchor Phenomenon was initially observed during Cycle 1, when surviving batch-quarters exhibited distinctive stabilization relative to one another. Over subsequent cycles, these individuals were reclassified as anchor-class leftovers. Although not originally included in the program design, their impact on Tether regulation has been sufficiently significant to warrant ongoing observation.
Definition
Anchor-class leftovers are defined as surviving batch-quarters who demonstrate persistent resonance and emotional connection, a phenomenon commonly referred to as "anchoring."
Observed Effects
Positive Outcomes:
Stabilization: Tethers associated with anchors exhibit reduced rates of unprovoked aggression and increased stability during or following tether spirals.
Compliance: The presence of an anchor enhances handler influence. Anchors frequently function as emotional regulators.
Leverage Potential: The threat or harm to an anchor can be used to coerce obedience from the tether.
Negative Outcomes:
Dependency: Extended proximity leads to psychological dependence. Severe injury or death of an anchor destabilizes the surviving subject, often resulting in permanent instability, catatonia, or self-inflicted death.
Recovery Uncertain: While rehabilitation is theoretically possible, empirical data remain limited. The majority of Tethers and Leftovers experience permanent destabilization after anchor loss.
Classification
Primary anchors: Most anchor connections originate between units within the same batch during early program phases, typically forming near the onset of Phase 2.
Secondary anchors: These connections have been documented to form spontaneously between unrelated subjects during later training phases or even centuries into service. The underlying cause remains undetermined, with theories including prolonged exposure, emotional imprinting, or survival conditioning.
Unresolved Questions
The Institute has not yet determined whether anchor connections can or should be prevented.
Forced separation trials have yielded inconsistent outcomes. Some subjects achieve independent stabilization, whereas others display violent destabilization or experience fatal overload.
